Corona virus pandemic
COVID 19 is rapidly engulfing Africa and Uganda among the countries struggling with the pandemic. Currently over 5000 cases have been reported in Africa and over 50 cases in Uganda. There are preventive measures of national wide lock down, quarantine, social isolation, use of facial masks, personal protective equipment and hand washing with soap or use of sanitizers, however, this is not adequate. In a country that lacks sufficient emergence and critical care services and inadequate staff, the health of pregnant women, new mothers and newborns risks catastrophic damage from COVID 19 pandemic. Pregnant women are one of the risk groups to Covid 19 due to their lowered immunity during pregnancy. The meagre resources are being redirected to fight coronavirus and health workers strained in the fight against this pandemic. There is minimal attention directed towards maternal health and yet it is one of the leading causes of deaths in Uganda. Pregnant mothers, their newborns and new mothers are in urgent need for your support.
- There is need to ensure that pregnant women and their newborns continue receiving maternal health services
- Protective medical supplies such as facial masks, gloves and sanitizers such as soap
- Critical life support equipment such as ventilators
- Training, raising awareness and sensitization among pregnant women on COVID 19 prevention
- Testing of pregnant women and children against COVID 19
